I work with several designers and freelancers on a daily basis. One thing that I’ve noticed in most PSD files is a lack of file preparations. Sometimes, I get files with random layer names & properties and sometimes I get files that are very clean and easy to work with.

I think the key thing for designers is to practice a bit of common sense and clean their files before passing their PSD files to developers so that they won’t have to scratch their heads when they open your files.
